Change of Command: New Leadership Takes Helm of Marine Special Operations Company Bravo

Camp Lejeune, NC – In a solemn and time-honored ceremony, Marine Special Operations Company Bravo (MSOC Bravo) welcomed a new leader. On August 31, 2024, Major Jason “Atlas” Mercer assumed command of the elite unit, succeeding Major Daniel “Viper” Reynolds, who has led the company with distinction for the past 18 months.

The change of command ceremony took place at Camp Lejeune’s Stone Bay, the heart of Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC). Attended by senior officers, enlisted Marines, and family members, the event marked a significant transition for one of the Marine Corps’ most storied special operations units.

Major Reynolds, who took command of MSOC Bravo in early 2023, has been instrumental in guiding the company through a period of intense operational deployments. Under his leadership, MSOC Bravo executed multiple high-stakes missions across several continents, contributing to the global fight against terrorism and unconventional threats.

During his command, Major Reynolds emphasized the importance of readiness and the cultivation of small-unit leadership within the company. His efforts resulted in enhanced operational capabilities and a renewed focus on adaptability in complex environments.

In his farewell speech, Major Reynolds reflected on his time with MSOC Bravo, expressing pride in the unit’s accomplishments and confidence in its future.

“Leading MSOC Bravo has been the privilege of my career,” Reynolds said. “The dedication and professionalism of the Marines and Sailors in this company are unparalleled. We’ve faced challenges that tested us to our limits, but every time, you rose to the occasion. As I hand over command, I do so knowing that MSOC Bravo is in the best possible hands with Major Mercer.”

Major Jason Mercer, a seasoned Marine officer with extensive experience in special operations, now steps into the role of commanding officer for MSOC Bravo. Known for his strategic insight and strong rapport with his Marines, Major Mercer is well-prepared to lead the company through its next phase of operations.

Major Mercer has previously served in various leadership roles within MARSOC, including as an operations officer during multiple deployments in the Middle East and Africa. His leadership style is characterized by a focus on mission readiness and the professional development of his Marines.

During the ceremony, Major Mercer addressed the company for the first time as its commanding officer.

“It’s an honor to take command of such a distinguished unit,” Mercer stated. “MSOC Bravo has a reputation for excellence, forged through the hard work and sacrifice of every Marine and Sailor here. As we move forward, my commitment is to maintain that standard, to be ready for any challenge, and to ensure that this team continues to be a force to be reckoned with.”

The change of command ceremony included the traditional passing of the unit’s colors, symbolizing the transfer of responsibility and the trust that comes with command. As Major Mercer takes charge, MSOC Bravo remains poised to continue its vital role in MARSOC’s mission to provide specialized, scalable combat power to combatant commanders around the world.

The Marines of MSOC Bravo are expected to maintain their high operational tempo in the coming months, with upcoming deployments and training exercises designed to enhance their effectiveness in diverse and demanding environments. With Major Mercer at the helm, the company is well-positioned to meet the challenges that lie ahead, continuing its legacy of excellence in special operations.

As the ceremony concluded, the Marines and Sailors of MSOC Bravo stood ready, confident in their new leader and prepared to uphold the proud traditions of their unit.
